What is WordPress Beta Tester?
WordPress Beta Tester is a plugin that allows you to upgrade to the latest beta version.
Beta versions may not always be downgraded, as the database structure may be updated during development.
Do not use it on your operational web site. Always backup your database before upgrading to the beta version.
How to use the WordPress Beta Tester
The steps to install and activate the WordPress Beta Tester and upgrade to the latest beta version are as follows.
Install the Plugin
Install the WordPress Beta Tester and go to the “Add Plugins” page in the WordPress admin panel.
- Type WordPress Beta Tester in the search box
- Click the Install Now button
Activate the Plugin
Activate the WordPress Beta Tester. Click the Activate button.
Set update channel and stream
- Click on Tools in the admin panel navigation
- Click Beta Testing
- Select the Bleeding edge from the update channel
- Click the Save changes button
- Select Beta/RC Only from the stream options
- Click the Save changes button
Update Channel | Description |

Nightlies | Latest daily updates. |
Beta/RC Only | This is for the Beta/RC releases only of the selected channel. |
Release Candidates Only | This is for the Release Candidate releases only of the selected channel. |
Update WordPress
- Click on Dashboard from the administration screen navigation
- Click Updates
- Click the Update to latest nightly button
It has been upgraded to the latest beta version, WordPress 5.8 Beta 4 (as of June 26, 2021).
When a new beta or release candidate version is released, update it in the same way from the update page.
Revert to normal WordPress
If you want to go back to normal WordPress from the beta version, deactivate the plugin and reinstall it from the WordPress update page.
